YMCARunners Get Dirty; Hall Towels Off; Schmierbach Gets the Six

Our YMCARunners got BUSY the weekend of May 10 by competing in a smorgasbord of athletic events. Road races are hard to find in the post season swelter, but there are multi sport events aplenty for our multiple personality runners.

2008 MUDDY BUDDY

This nasty annual adventure involves two person teams that compete within expanded age categories on a course that engenders a fair amount of confusery. The 7ish mile course snakes around the wilder side of Disney and combines alternating segments of running and mountain biking with obstacles located at various transition areas. The obstacles included rope ladders, select cast members from “The Sopranos” and that smoke monster thing from “Lost”. One buddy bikes while the other buddy runs; buddies switch tasks at the transition points in a leapfrog fashion. The final obstacle consists of a huge mud pit through which you and your buddy must low crawl to complete the race. Considering that there was a race division named "Beast" (male teams weighing more than a combined 400 lbs), this is the ultimate trailer park multisport event! While none of our buff runners qualified as "beasts" (looks are inapplicable), they certainly competed that way:

John Napolitano / Kurt Brewer ("Team Guinness") 42:38 (2nd Age Group, 6th Event Overall)

Kathy & Mike Gagnier ("Rents") 47:41 (1st Age Group)

Chad & Katlin Gagnier ("Quails") 1:12 (Mom & Dad smoked you guys!)

Brian & Kim Capps ("Married Gators") 53:28

Dinah Philips / Derek Malarkey ("Single & Dirty") 1:03

2008 HURRICANE MAN SWIM

I-Bar Hipster Sean McCormack and Aquababe Ryan Hall travelled with the Masters of Orlando swim team to historic Pass-A-Grille for some open water swim action. A rough chop, unfavorable tides and hundreds of hungry hammerheads slowed the field a bit, but at least our running swimmers (swimming runners?) could toast their times atop the Hurricane Bar & Grill after the race. Ryan stunned the women’s 1k field with an overall winning time of 16:05 while Sean swamped most of his competition in the 2.4 mile swim with a 2nd Overall / 1st Age Group award in just 53:36.

2008 I-DRIVE 5K RUN

It’s not quite tourist season yet, so this race is the perfect opportunity to tour I-Drive when it is more of a road instead of a parking lot. The I-Drive 5k may run through the capital of Touristan, but it boasts the best prizes of any race in Central Florida. Capital Grill gift certificates, tickets to Seaworld and publishing deals with Random House are just a few examples of the wondrous loot handed out to age group placers.

As can be expected, the YMCA Running Club was well represented. Brent Schmierbach turned in his first ever 6 minute mile 5k performance (18:39), which was good enough to win 1st place in his age group. Teresa Calio ran a relexed 20:21 to win her 97th Female Masters title this season.
